Intimate on 18th Street / lntimo en la 18
As a visual artist and writer, I have focused my efforts on documentation and invention. I listen to stories and am fascinated by objects and place. This means that barber shops, sandwiches, sensibilities during parades and other rituals feed my work. I utilize photography, collage, verse and other mediums to illustrate a moment, feeling or concept. Always, the viewer is free to interpret, and will be guided with the title of a work or narration of a piece. Thich Naht Hanh, the Buddhist poet nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Martin Luther King, Jr., has been one of my most recent inspirations. He focuses on mindfulness and staying in the moment as instruments of peace. This has helped me to appreciate and document the stories, emotions, images, tastes and smells of my surroundings and those imagined and perceived elsewhere.
I remember being moved by the textures and colors of Pilsen during my first visit to Chicago in 1995. A decade later, I have lived here for more than a year and am still moved by the moments that greet me daily.
